Honda Civic Type R FL5 – a hot-hatch with a track pedigree
The new generation Civic Type R proves that the front-drive and manual transmission can still challenge much more powerful rivals. The turbocharged 2.0 VTEC Turbo gasoline develops 329 horsepower and 420 Nm, and the precise 6-speed transmission withrev-match function lets you hammer through the gears faster than you think. Performance? 5.4 seconds to 100 km/h and a top speed of 275 km/h – numbers that make the Type R the fastest FWD hot-hatch.
Behind the wheel, you will immediately feel that this car was designed for the track: a mechanical spooler provides traction on corner exits, and adaptive dampers in +R mode harden the suspension so that every brake application of the Brembo four-piston brakes ends in a surgical change of direction. With such power, you have to take special care of safety. The widened fenders, functional rear wing and triple center exhaust tip look exactly as aggressive as they sound. Even the headlights add a sporty touch.
The interior is unmistakably sporty: bucket seats upholstered in red microfiber hold firmly in the corners, the Alcantara steering wheel doesn’t slip even with gloves on, and the digital +R-meter shows live overload, temperatures and pressures. At the same time, you get the complete Honda Sensing package with adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist as standard, a 9-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, and 12-speaker Bose audio, so even your daily commute is pure pleasure.
Under the hood is one of the last four-cylinder engines that can rev above 7,000 rpm, and with every clutching the exhaust fires like a rally car. If you’re looking for a hot-hatch that combines uncompromising character with a practical four-seat interior and roomy trunk, the Civic Type R FL5 is the perfect choice.
