The “Competition” designation on the M2 denotes the continuation of the model (unlike the M3 F80 and M4 F82 where it appears as an additional package that can be selected during the car’s configuration). There are many differences between the M2 and the M2 Competition, the biggest of which is a completely different engine. The “Mce” offered with us features a unit straight from the M3 and M4 models with twin turbocharging. With this and significant suspension changes, the M2 Competition fully deserves the “M” title.

The M2 Competition is, without question, one of the sharpest “hot hatches” available on the market. Certainly, the Audi RS3 or Mercedes A45s are faster propositions “on paper,” but it is BMW that is the only one on the market to offer a three-liter unit in such a small car, on top of which it is combined with rear-wheel-only drive. The difference in the units used between the “regular” M2 and the Competition version translates into far better flexibility at higher speeds. The car has noticeably more “power” (+ 40 hp and + 85 Nm) and is more provocative to drive fast.

BMW listened to its customers and the smallest “Mka”, along with the new version, got what it lacked most before. Great dynamics and excellent handling characteristics are perfectly complemented by a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission. In the interior, you will find cosmetic but important changes from the driver’s point of view. On the center console you will no longer find the “Sport” and “Comfort” switch. In Competition, we can individually adjust the operation of the transmission, engine and steering. There are also “M1” and “M2” buttons on the driver, with which we can quickly select the setting we configured earlier.

Many have questioned whether the previous M2 was a full-fledged “M” model. This was mainly due to the power unit used, which could also be found in civilian variants. In the case of the “Competition” it is hard to have any dilemma about it, and some compare it with the legendary 1M model. It is also worth keeping in mind that, thanks to the ability to customize the operation of components, the car will also perform well on the road or when driving around town. The BMW M2 Competition delivers plenty of pure driving pleasure and is the ideal choice for anyone looking for a true driver’s car. With its combination of a large three-liter unit, rear-wheel drive only and small size, it is a one-of-a-kind proposition.
